What Are Acupuncture Points

I define Acupressure points as “Specific places on your body that by pushing influence you physically, emotionally and mentally”

How do you find acupuncture points

I use classical Chinese medical acupuncture points that have been used for thousands of years.

  • There are 365 main acupressure / acupuncture points on the body
  • Each acupressure point has a specific location
  • Acupressure points are arranged along pathways
  • Its important to understand these pathways and how they relate to your symptoms.

How do you know which acupuncture points to use

The acupuncture points that you use will depend on 3 things

  1. What you are trying to achieve – pain relief or a deeper constitutional shift.
  2. Where your symptoms are – Each area of your body is covered by a specific channel, points along these or related channels are often the most effective points
  3. The Chinese medical understanding of your symptom pattern.

The first and most important understanding is what you would like.  Sometimes it is important to just shift the pain before working on the deeper causes of the pain.  For others helping to get a good nights sleep is paramount before any work on other symptoms can be looked at.  Emotional issues can sometimes be so intense that until the mind can be balanced it is unrealistic to look at changing anything else.

I’ve seen thousands of people and I’ve never given the exact same treatment twice.  That’s because each time the body has changed a bit, or the mind has become focused on a new issue.  Each treatment and choice of acupressure points takes all this into account.

Core Treatment

Having said that each treatment is different, there are also similarities between each treatment.  This is what I call the core treatment.  This is a set of points that stay the same as they are working on the deeper imbalances in your body.  These points are chosen by using the understandings of the body as described in Classical Chinese medical theory.

“Mary is in her 30s she is exhausted looking after 2 young children, working part time and keen on exercising and maintain a busy social life.  Each week there are different symptoms, headaches, painful periods, sore feet, recovering from a cold.  All those symptoms need to be treated but there is a deeper exhaustion that underlies all these symptoms.  The core acupressure points are used to help this deeper imbalance, whilst different points are used to treat the day to day symptoms.”
